Cross-Disciplinary Sound Art Residency & Presentation: Black Canyons

2015

Visual Arts; Music; Live Interactive Performances

Artist/s: David Haines (NSW), Joyce Hinterding NSW), Michael Morley (NZ)

The Cross-Disciplinary Sound Art Residency responds to the growing interest in cross disciplinary practice that is currently occurring in music and the visual arts. It is a unique opportunity for sound artists to develop new works that blur boundaries of genres and disciplines.

Campbelltown Arts Centre hosted internationally acclaimed sound artists Sun Valley, comprising renowned Australian artists David Haines and Joyce Hinterding and New Zealand artist Michael Morley in a two week residency to develop a new multi-media sound work. This new work Black Canyons combined field recordings and video footage from various locations in the Blue Mountains with found objects, synthesizers and electric guitar to create a work where audience members were not just watching and listening but being immersed in sound and vision.

The residency and performance were both featured in articles and interviews in the Macarthur Advertiser and the Sydney Morning Herald. The world premiere of Black Canyons was presented to enthusiastic local and extended audiences on Saturday 31 October at Campbelltown Arts Centre with audience members being invited to sit on chairs, cushions and beanbags dispersed throughout the space.
