In 2014 Campbelltown Arts Centre will curate the final stage of its three year (2012-2014) project Temporary Democracies, curated by Paul Gazzola.
Temporary Democracies brings together 12 emerging and established artists from NSW, ACT, QLD and NZ in a series of on-site artist residencies, to research, develop and present a series of artist-lead site-based interdisciplinary projects that engage local communities, positioned within houses listed for demolition in the suburb of Airds, NSW.
Major project outcomes in 2014 are the final creative developments of site-based projects by 8 artists, for public presentation in September, to include community and artists’ forums and talks, an online artists’ forum and printed publication.
Temporary Democracies positions artists in a supported environment to:
• Re-consider the civic realm of their practice, develop new works that critically explore the social contexts and consequences of urban renewal.
• Participate in on-site studio-residencies in the form of an artist lab situated in houses set for demolition in Airds.
• Investigate and experiment with new processes and presentation for site-specific work in a unique setting and involving local residents and communities through artist-lead participation, dialogue and interaction.
• Realise works at the nexus of interdisciplinary practice and engagement
