Artist/s: Created by Deborah Brown (NSW) and Lucy Phelan (NSW), Performed by Leeanne Hunter (NSW) and Sharni Potts (NSW)
Hide, a short contemporary dance film, was created and was premiered as part of the I Can Hear Dancing season. The film was made by Deborah Brown and Lucy Phelan on Local Aboriginal women, in particular, Leeanne Hunter and Sharni Potts.
The film explores bonds of friendship between the women and the inner doubts that plague them. Hiding from the outside world and their selves, Hide is a story of the hidden and revealed.
Artists undertook creative development residencies at Campbelltown Arts Centre in February and March 2015, worked on editing of the digital material from March until May, before the final premiere/Community Screening. The work was played throughout the I Can Hear Dancing season, looped for audiences to view in the foyer whilst seeing live works as part of the program.
This is a pivotal contemporary Indigenous short dance film, addressing contemporary women’s issues, such as self-esteem and domestic violence, particularly in Indigenous communities. It is a powerful resource, carries a strong message of togetherness, and was a significant project for all artists and community who participated.
Made as an interdisciplinary collaboration between Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists, it is made by, with and for women.
The work was made on location on Dharawal land. The Community Screening was attended by approximately 30 people, including artists, community members and families, and included a performance by Campbelltown Arts Centre’s resident Aboriginal girls dance group Amaroo Dangara (now Wiritjiribin Dance Group) to launch the film.
After the screening a discussion between Deborah Brown, Leeanne Hunter and Sharni Potts explored the process of making the film and inspirations for the themes represented in the work.
