There's a hole in the sky brings together nine Australian and international artists using acts of portraiture to discuss notions of anxiety, unease and ways of coping in public or private moments. While some artists connect personally with popular culture or local territory, others use humour and absurdity to push the limits of social tension and public reaction. In contrast, selected works focus on isolation and obsession and how our immediate surroundings are embedded with these ideas.
With a number of new works commissioned specifically for the project, There’s a hole in the sky questions the role of repetition in our actions, how artists extend this to our survival and the effects on those around us. While a distinction between interior and external space is often established in the works, this line is occasionally blurred, bringing into question the truths that we reveal to others and what is withheld.
